Frequently asked questions

Do you have a demonstration Kobra?

Yes, we aim to always have a car around for you to inspect.

Why buy from Kobra Kit cars, I can import it cheaper from the UK?

An imported kit costs around $5,000, plus approximately $4,000 for shipping, customs, etc. So yes, you can do it cheaper; however, the imported kit does not meet Australian design rules. Our Kobra Kit version includes compliance paperwork that can get design approval in any state.

Do you supply completed cars?

We don’t build finished cars, just supply kits for you to do yourself. However, we could be easily tempted to sell our demonstration Kobra, and would be happy to start the build process again for the next demonstration model. So, if you want a finished Kobra just ask, you may just get us at the right time.

Do I have to be a mechanic to fit this kit?

Anyone who works a bit on their car can fit this kit. Removal of existing body panels and lights needs simple hand tools. Fitting new panels is relatively straightforward, often using the same mounting holes. Add a bit of simple fibreglass work to make a few brackets, tweak the panel gaps, and mount the other accessories you want (e.g. grill mesh). Finally, change the 12v electrical wiring to swap for new lights. So, if you have some good DIY skills, go for it.

What sort of BMW Z3 should I look for?

This comes down to preference, do you want an automatic or manual transmission? Then, how much power do you want? We recommend you look for a Z3 with poor paint & panels, as these parts you won’t require (except doors), so it should get you a cheaper car to start.

A “proper” AC Cobra Replica has a V8; can this be done in the Kobra version?

LS1 v8 conversions for BMW z3 are available from a company in Sydney (Brintech). Our 2nd Kobra kit is actually based on a 1997 Z3 that has a Toyota 1UZ V8 installed.

What about all the accessories (lights, hinges, vents, badges, etc) I’ll need, do you supply these?

All the above are available online, on Ebay or directly through suppliers. For example, we get our lights from British Classic Spare Parts - Beerwah.
